"It was the Christmas party at my college in Leeds, and I had
driven in and decided I'd leave my car in town, get the night bus
home and pick up the car in the morning.
We started drinking at about 4 in the afternoon and ended up clubbing
till about 2.30 in the morning. I stopped drinking about midnight
and switched to water because I was feeling a bit rough.
On the walk to the bus stop we passed my car - it was the only one
on the street and I thought - "Shouldn't really leave it all
night in the middle of Leeds" and persuaded four of my mates
that I was sober (because I'd been drinking water all night hadn't
I?) and we got in and set off.
It all went okay for a while and I dropped my first mate off okay,
but soon I couldn't concentrate and it was hard to even stay awake!"
I remember going round a corner and going up hard on the kerb and
everyone in the back suddenly stopped laughing and joking and telling
me how pissed I was. I still reckoned I was okay and managed to
convince them I was just tired. We drove another couple of miles
to the next mate's house and got pulled over. just before the turn
into his cul-de-sac.
They all went nuts in the back and reckoned I was screwed, but
when the copper walked up and and I wound the window down, they
said they were just looking for someone. I couldn't believe they
didn't breathalyse me.
I still remember the the seriousness of the situation in my mind
as I looked in the rear view mirror, saw my mates horrified faces,
the blue flashing lights, and the police officer walking towards
me."
