National Deer-Vehicle Collisions project

Recent up-dates to project web-site.

With beginning of the New Year it seems a good time to thank all of you who have continued to support the Deer Collisions project during 2006; your assistance has enabled us to collect information on over 30,000 deer road casualties and related vehicle collisions since beginning of the project in 2003, providing valuable information to assess the scale of the problem and identify regional patterns and accident hotspots.

We shall also be continuing to collect records of DVCs from across a wide range of sources in England throughout this year and into early 2008. Particular focus for monitoring this year will be on major data sources such as from trunk road agents, animal rescue organisations, insurance companies, police records for DVCs causing human injury, as well as incidents attended by rangers in a range of major forests and a number of other case study areas. However, in addition all records submitted by others via the on-line recording form at the project web-site (including incidents in Scotland and Wales, as well as England), will also continue to be collated and form a valuable part of the study.

A brief summary including updated national and regional distribution maps for 2003-05 has just been added to the project web-site; and will be updated again later in the year once all outstanding records for 2006 have been received and collated. To view that update please click on 'Latest Results' from the front page of www.deercollisions.co.uk

Other publications and press releases recently added to the site (which may be accessed by clicking the links below) include :

i. Report on findings of the DVC project (2003-2005) for Scotland

ii. "Collision Cause" – an article reviewing existing and novel measures being trialled to help reduce deer vehicle collisions (first published July 2006 in Deer [The Journal of The British Deer Society], 5pp)

Further up-dates will be made to the web-pages at frequent intervals throughout the next few months as more results become available for publication.
