Air Bags

air bags

Air bags have been designed to help reduce injury during an impact, however, for a air bag to work fully and safely, the driver and passengers must be wearing seat belts. Below are some facts and illustrations on air bags and seat belts, click here to view the full pdf.

 1
Immediately after the air bag has inflated, the air bag and several of its component parts will be very hot. If you touch them, you could be burned.

 2
The air bag is not a substitute for properly wearing a seat belt. The initial stage of air bag inflation is the most powerful, which can cause severe of fatal injuries if contact is made at this stage between the air bag and passenger.

 3

The air bag will inflate if the vehicle impacts head-on (as shown above) with a solid surface (such as a wall) that does not move of deform at the speed of approximately 15mph (25km/h) or higher.

 4

The air bags may inflate if the vehicle impacts with an elevated median / island or curb, or if the vehicle travels over a deep hole / pot hole. The air bag may also inflate if the vehicle drives down a steep slope and hits the ground.

 5

Air bags may not inflate if the vehicle impacts with a utility pole, tree of or other narrow objects. Air bags may not inflate also if the vehicle travels under the body of another vehicle such as a truck or if the vehicle is involved in a oblique / diagonal frontal impact.

 6

Air bags will not inflate if another vehicle impacts the rear or side of your vehicle. The air bag will also not inflate if your vehicle rolls over on its side or roof.

 7

Do not allow infants and children to sit in the front passenger’s seat or stand in the footwell area. If a child sits with their hands on the dashboard or with their head or chest close to it, there is an extremely high risk the child will sustain a severe or fatal injury when the air bag inflates.

 8

Because the air bag inflates at a very high speed and with great force, contact with the air bag during the initial stage of inflation could result in severe of fatal injury. This is why it is critical to always properly wear a seat belt and maintain the proper driving position.

 9

When the air bag is inflated, it makes a sudden, fairly loud noise and releases some white smoke and powder. This does not indicate a fire in the car and produces not permanent side effects on the human body.

 10

Do not place anything or attach anything to the dashboard. Also do not place anything between you and the dash board as the sudden force of the air bag inflating could result in any object causing a severe injury.
