The campaign was launched on 2nd December at The Kings Head in
Norton, and involved representatives from Fire, Police and Ambulance.
Three convicted drink drivers joined us to tell their own stories
illustrating the personal and social consequences of their conviction.
During the campaign Police Officers conducted 3156 breath tests,
with 101 people (3%) giving a positive or refused specimen. The
number of peopled killed nationally in drink-drive collisions in
2004 was the highest since 1992. The number of deaths in 2004 was
590 - 10 more than in 2003 and the highest since 1992 when 660 people
were killed in drink-drive collisions.
With the average legal limit in most EU member states being 50 mg
per 100 ml, perhaps it is time for Government to consider reducing
the limit from 80 mg, as it is now, to 50 mg. RoSPA believe that
this move could save 65 lives and 230 serious injuries per year.
Driving whilst unfit through drink and drugs remains a serious road
safety problem that is with us every single day, not just at Christmas.
